The album is a powerful sonic journey, travelling the course. ![]() Since 1969, there have been many fine cover versions of “Memory Pain” by artists such as Savoy Brown, Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation, Gary Moore, Pat Travers, and Thin Lizzy.Įdgar has just released a star-studded heartfelt tribute titled Brother Johnny with 17 tracks including two originals and a world of guest artists, including guitar slingers Derek Trucks, Robben Ford, Billy Gibbons, Joe Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Shepher, Keb’ Mo’, and Joe Walsh.įor “Memory Pain,” one of the three tracks from Second Winter selected, Edgar corralled Warren Haynes (Gov’t Mule) on guitar and vocals, Sean Hurley on bass, and Gregg Bissonette on drums. Brother Johnny, a tribute to the legendary blues guitarist created by his brother Edgar Winter. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band included the tune in their repertoire, and a 1966 live version, often bootlegged, finally had an official release 50 years later on Got a Mind to Give Up Living: Live 1966. This album represented strides past Johnny Winter (Columbia) and The Progressive Blues Experiment (Imperial), and “Memory Pain” just leapt out at you, that nasty, nasty guitar, Johnny’s signature scorching Texas blues vocals, and the fine backing duo of “Uncle” John Turner, percussion, and Tommy Shannon, bass. He is a multi-instrumentalist, playing keyboards, guitar, saxophone, and percussion, as well as singing. However, many of us keeled over when we dropped the needle on side one of the three-sided album Second Winter, actually the third album by Texas tornado Johnny Winter (all issued in 1969), with his brother Edgar Winter fully integrated into the sound on piano, organ, harpsichord, and alto saxophone. Edgar Holland Winter (born December 28, 1946) is an American musician. Very few of us ever heard his original version. In 1964, the great composer Percy Mayfield issued a single on Tangerine Record Company.
